FAQs

Electric Wheelchair

What’s the differences between electric wheelchairs and manual wheelchairs?

Electric wheelchairs are more expensive than manual ones, and they require regular charging. Manual wheelchairs are cheaper and don't need batteries, but they can be difficult to propel over long distances. Consider your needs and budget when making a decision between manual and electric wheelchairs.

How do I choose the right electric wheelchair for my needs?

For use indoors, make sure the power wheelchair can fit and maneuver through hallways and rooms. For use outdoors, the terrain will affect the range of the chair. Front wheel drive, with wheels located in the front of the power chair and casters in the rear, maneuvers well around tight corners and up and down slopes.

What safety features should I look for in an electric wheelchair?

Before using your electric wheelchair, be sure to inspect it for any damage or malfunctions. This includes checking the brakes, tires and battery life. You should also be aware of any recalls or safety concerns related to their specific model of electric wheelchair.

How do I maintain and care for my electric wheelchair?

One of the best ways to maintain your power wheelchair is to take care of it properly from the onset. You should always store your mobility aid in a cool, dry place. Don't let any moisture or spills sit too long as they can eventually cause damage. Use a protective cover for your power wheelchair when it's not in use.

Are there any regulations or restrictions for using electric wheelchairs in public spaces?

State/local governments and businesses must allow a person with a disability who uses a wheelchair or other manually powered mobility aid into all areas where members of the public are allowed to go. Learn more about the ADA and mobility device here.
